Four questions to Stephan Unger, Chief Financial Officer Daimler Financial Services AG

Mr. Unger, you are supporting sustainability at Daimler Financial Services. Why?

As a company, we are responsible not only for our employees, customers and shareholders, but also for the environment and our society. When it comes to sustainability, we are highly self-motivated, but we are also motivated by the implementation of the UN sustainability goals. Although these goals are initially aimed at governments and states, the industry also plays an important role with its innovative and investment power.

And what goals would that be?

All people working for us should do so under humane conditions - both within our own ranks and in the supply chain. In doing so, we are taking a risk-based management approach and are thus supporting, for example, Sustainability Goal 8 "Decent Work". Autonomous cars will have a positive impact on road safety and climate protection and thus contribute to Objective 9 "Industry, innovation, infrastructure". Also our commitment to environmental protection and our mobility services contribute to objectives 11 "Sustainable cities and communities", 12 "Sustainable consumption and production" and 13 "Climate protection measures".

Can you give us concrete examples?

Certainly! Above all, our mobility services demonstrate our sustainable, innovative approach. Best example: car2go. Our carsharing provider can lead to fewer miles driven per private car and reduced CO₂ emissions. In addition to local public transport, our mobility platform moovel, the taxi app mytaxi and its pooling solutions such as mytaximatch or moovel Flex Pilot, as well as the Via ride-sharing service, help to reduce the load on transport infrastructure and transport systems in urban areas.

Let's talk about urban mobility. What will it look like in the future?

We no longer regard ourselves just as a vehicle manufacturer, but above all as a mobility service provider. That's why we also support the concept of a connected city. So-called smart cities will improve the quality of life for all citizens with a range of digital solutions. When it comes to mobility, the focus is on improving the traffic situation, reducing emissions and accidents - and this is precisely where our products and services come in.
