March 27, 2019 - Moving into the future! According to a study by the digital association Bitkom, 50 cities in Germany are now driving forward smart city initiatives. The most frequent projects deal with the topics of mobility and administration. But not every city has already developed a full-scale digitization strategy.
More and more German municipalities are making their way into the digital world, this is the result of a cooperative study by the digital association Bitkom and the Frauenhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering (IESE) as well as 13 other partners.
To be included in the Smart-City-Atlas, municipalities must already have initiated an integrated digital strategy and established an independent organizational unit and partner network.
"Urbanity is being redefined in digital cities," says Bitkom President Achim Berg. The 50 cities surveyed are each in different phases. 19 have already adopted a digital agenda and 29 are in the process of developing one.
Smart City: The most important topics
The most important topics are the digitization of administration (98 percent), mobility (92 percent) and energy and environment (86 percent). The lighthouse projects named by the cities themselves are primarily implemented in the areas of administration (74 percent), mobility (60 percent) and data platforms (36 percent).
Bitkom deduces the following points as general recommendations for action:
- Making support at the highest management level and digitization a top priority
- Design of a strategy process that is as lean as possible
- Creation of a central institution that coordinates, initiates and communicates
- Involvement of all relevant local actors as well as employees and citizens
- Supraregional exchange of experience
- Start digitization on a small scale, implement individual measures quickly and agilely
