Mobility at the Tech Open Air 2019

July 05, 2019 - For the seventh time the Tech Open Air took place in Berlin. Young and old, students and industry experts as well as corporations and start-ups met at Europe's largest technology festival. During the four-day event, around 1,400 visitors exchanged ideas in lectures and seminars on the theme pillars "New Communities", "Pioneering Business", "Deep Tech", "Emotional Innovation" and "Music of the Future & Art".

For the second time in a row Daimler AG was one of the partners of the TOA and brought together different Daimler divisions in a familiar manner. New this year was the partnership with T-Systems and the joint appearance under the motto "Urbania". Urbania is a metaphor for a new type of city that leads us safely and sustainably into the future. It therefore stands for a new way of thinking about urban work, life and mobility.

Urban Mobility to create comfort

With the topics "Urban Mobility", "Autonomous Services" and "Digital Mobility Solutions", the future Daimler Mobility presented itself to tech enthusiasts. The five-member cross-divisional Urbanic Team, which ensures that we are rewarded for sustainable mobility in the future with a points system, received a warm response.

The "Urban Mobility" panel with Thomas Hengstermann (Head of Autonomous Services), Katja Hector (Urban Mobility Expert), Dr. Anton Schäfer (Vice President, Business Development Travel, Transport & Logistics, T-Systems) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johannes Springer (CTO Connected Cars, T-Systems) once again demonstrated the changes currently facing the mobility sector.

Cooperation with and between public and private partners is the key. Above all, the challenge is to make mobility solutions more convenient than own cars: "It is a human right to be mobile. We have to find solutions to enable mobility for all," explained Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johannes Springer.

Making mobility flexible

Olivier Reppert (CEO SHARE NOW) illustrated in his lecture "Embracing the Sharing Economy" what is behind the so-called "Sharing Economy" in the mobility sector. The invention of the car over a hundred years ago gave us freedom and flexibility. Today, the majority of privately owned cars are unused all day long and are not moved. In this way, they take up valuable space in urban spaces. In order to regain this space, SHARE NOW is working on making the advantages of car sharing visible.

Together with the cities, a charging infrastructure will be created in order to be able at some point to guarantee 100% use of purely electric vehicles in road traffic. An autonomous fleet concept is the next step. SHARE NOW is thus an important part of "Urban Mobility". We believe that there must be a holistic supply concept for various applications in order to bring about a change in behaviour in the use of mobility.

Mobility: Focus on people

In addition, Daimler Financial Services and Stefanie Prausa (Head of Digital Mobility Solutions) were guests at the panel "Why cultural change is key for digital transformation?" on the Urbania stage. Together with Frieder Munk (Manager Culture & Innovation DigitalLife, Daimler AG), Monika Jiang (Co-Curator & Chamber Program Lead, The Business Romantic Society) and Ulf-Jost Kossol (Head of Social Business Technology, T-Systems Multimedia Solutions), the panel discussed why digital transformation must be about people.

In order to make this possible, the human being must be placed in the centre of the company. Keywords such as transparency, empowerment, error culture and role models are of particular importance here.

A world without traffic jams

Another highlight was the lecture "A world without traffic jams" by Daniela Gerd tom Markotten (CEO REACH NOW). She illustrated that although we cannot change the natural topography of a city, we can change the way people move through it.
